Best Birthday Gift Ever

For my 32nd (wince) birthday, Eric gave me season tickets to Ballet West.  I was so delighted, especially because of this year's schedule: Carmina Burana, Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and Bolero.

This weekend was the first performance.  We went to a restaurant we hadn't tried before--Metropolitan.  Eric had fire roasted chicken and I had seared scallops, complemented by freshly baked rolls (I particularly enjoyed the citrus sunflower seed variety).  My favorite dish was actually our appetizer, the Metropolitan Mushrooms which were made with truffle potatoes, a red wine reduction, and feuille de brick--they were exquisite!

After dinner we were off to Capitol Theatre to see Carl Orff's Carmina Burana as performed by Ballet West and the Utah Symphony.  Carmina Burana is my very favorite composition, so I was ecstatic to see it performed as a live ballet.  It was essentially attending the symphony, the opera, and the ballet all at once.  It was simply spectacular.  The choreography and the execution were stunning, and the soprano and the baritone were both phenomenal.  I couldn't find any clips of the Ballet West performance, but here is an excerpt from the Macedonia Nacional Ballet's interpretation:

Eric, you've outdone yourself--best birthday yet!  I simply couldn't have imagined a better day.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I love Carmina Burana too! I've played in the orchestra and sung in it both, but I've never seen it done as a ballet. I bet it was spectacular! Lucky ducks! I bet Sleeping Beauty is fantastic too. That is one of my other favorite pieces of music.
